About REEF
About REEF
REEF is an environment where your child will continue to develop traits of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Learner Profile utilized during the school day. The REEF program is defined by the elements of the acronym Responsibility, Education, Exercise, and Fun through free play. We believe it is of the utmost importance that children learn to do the right thing even when no one is looking, to be open to learning even though the school day is over, to strengthen both mind and body through exercise, and most of all have fun!
At Yu Ying REEF students enjoy monthly field trips to museums and other locations all over the DC area. Students have the opportunity to visit the Air and Space Museum, The National Zoo (as seen above), Ice Skating, Duckpin Bowling and more!
While REEF is designed to be fun and engaging, students are expected to meet the same standards of behavior in REEF as they are during the school day. Children learn best in positive, safe, and consistent environments.

Daily Schedules
At Washington Yu Ying we are in a unique position because every Friday is a half day, our flexibility allows us the ability to cater to the particulars of each school. Monday through Thursday REEF runs from 3:30pm-6:00pm, Fridays from 1:00pm-6:00pm. The extra time on Fridays gives us the opportunity to do really cool activities and go much farther with a given topic than we'd otherwise be able. It also allows us to invite vendors for special group activities and partner with other organizations that may not be able to fit their programming into the short Monday through Thursday schedule.
Monday through Thursday, REEF runs from 3:30pm-6:00pm. During that time students participate in the two periods of classes they signed up for during registration.

K-5 students choose their own classes from a variety of options. *Late fees begin accruing at 6:00pm. $5/minute for the first 10 minutes and $1/minute after that.
Our Pre K students have a slightly different experience than our K-5 students. Their activities are a planned rotation as opposed to entirely elective and focus on literacy, motor, and interpersonal skills. Each day offers a different rotation with the exception of literacy

Every Friday is a half day! And that means we get started at 1:00pm and have about four hours of programming! REEF Fridays are done summer camp style with a rotation of fun activities chosen and planned by our supervisors with student input. Our older students (third grade and up) have more time with each activity so they can dig deeper into topics and try their hands at more complicated activities.
Sample Friday Schedule:
PreK 3 & 4: Spring Sky, Bird Sticks, Flower Coloring, Movement
K & 1st: Playground, Seasons of the Year, Early Spring Nature Walk, Movement Games (Turf)
2nd: Paper Airplane Flying School, Knockout, (90 minutes) Shadow Puppets
3rd: Straw Roller Coaster STEM Challenge, Kandinsky Circle Mural
4th & 5th: Duckpin Bowling
A great benefit of every Friday being a half day is that it allows enough time for field trips. There is a field trip every Friday and it rotates through the K-5 age groups. Pre K students go once per trimester. Some of the many places we visit are the Smithsonian National Museums, Bladensburg Waterfront Park (pictured right), Canal Park Ice Rink, Pump it Up! and more!
